Bright idea saves district council cash

THIS month’s glorious sunshine has saved Arun District Council more than £700 thanks to the Civic Centre’s recently-fitted solar panels.

During the five-day sunny spell, at the end of May, the 178 panels on the roof of the building, in Maltravers Road, captured 1,742 kilo watt hours of electricity.

Through a Government scheme, Arun will be able to claim £551.60 for all the hours saved.

That figure, when added to the 1,724 hours that the building did not need to draw from the national grid because of the power generated through the panels, resulted in a total saving of £715.38 over the five-day period.

The panels were installed in March and will cut the council’s annual electricity bill for the centre by £4,000 and will save 20.3 tonnes of CO2 emissions a year.
