PM speaks out over Conquest

PRIME Minister Tony Blair says it is 'vital' the Conquest Hospital at Hastings retains all its services.

Hastings and Rye MP Michael Foster asked the first question in Parliament after the summer break on Wednesday and took the opportunity to raise the issue of proposed downgrading of A&E and maternity services at the Conquest.

Mr Foster demanded the PM confirm that 'local people can challenge proposals by bureaucrats to downgrade cherished services'.

Mr Blair responded that any changes would be fully consulted upon and decisions reached locally.

He said: "We have seen a massive improvement in the NHS in recent years. It is vital that in Hastings and Rye we retain those services on which so many residents depend."

A delegation from Hastings, including Mr Foster and campaigners from Hands Off The Conquest, will visit Mr Blair next Wednesday.

Mr Foster said: "We're going to make sure our message gets across at the highest level."
