Playtime!

A POPULAR new playground has been swarming with children since it was opened at the weekend.

Adur District Council chairman Angie Mills officially opened the new playground at Parklands park, off Wilmot Road, Shoreham, on Monday.

The Southlanders residents' group and Adur council have worked together on the project with support from local people and children.

Consultation with the residents about the future of the park led to the design of a playground with top-of-the-range modern play equipment for toddlers up to pre-teens.

Southlands chairman Vanessa Thompson said: "This is the group's first major project and has taken about six months of planning and consultation.

"We've been able to tell the council what we wanted and what we didn't want. The children obviously love it, because it has been packed all the weekend.

"The basketball hoop is also keeping the older children from playing in the streets and the next plans are for a youth shelter for teenagers."

The playground is due to have fencing put around it and bins and benches installed.

Three Brighton University architectural students have designed the youth shelter, along with King's Manor youth wing, and residents will be able to look at a model of it when it goes on show in a marquee in the park on June 9 from 3pm to 8.30pm.
