But in true British spirit, we carried on anyway.

Playden was very fortunate on Saturday to have a dry lunch time, with even some sunshine. It was very good indeed to have the Butt Field in use for its proper purpose, namely “ the sport and recreation on the villagers.” The grass had been cut, the benches were in place, the new trees growing nicely, and a goodly crowd gathered with their picnics. Souvenirs of the occasion, delicious cup cakes, and a ‘mug’ of wine was all on offer, and games for the children to play .The young people who came to entertain us did remarkably well to make themselves heard in the windy conditions and were really good. Their theme was “Everybody is looking for someone” and they hammed it up well.

We were also entertained by three very supple young dancers, who didn’t seem to mind dancing on grass. The youngest,who must have been about 3, stole everyone’s heart.

It was a good community event, and thanks to the Parish Council for organising it.

The next council meeting will be on Thursday 14th June at 7.30 pm in the W. I. Hall. Do come.

Rye Country Market, formerly Rye W. I. Market, invites you to join them for Coffee/tea and Cake - £1 - to celebrate the Diamond Jubilee of her Majesty the Queen, and also the 40th Anniversary of the Market. This will take place on Friday 8th June from 10 till 11.30 am at the Rye Community Centre, Conduit Hill, Rye. This is TODAY.

On Monday 11th June from 2 to 4 pm at the Ferry Road Health Centre, the Patients’ Participation group is organising a tea party in aid of Marie Curie Cancer Care. All are welcome.

Many thanks to the people in our lane who contributed to Christian Aid. We added £77.30 to the Rye and District’s total, currently £3064.16. Several of these are Gift-Aided and so the grand total will be more.

Playden W. I. will be meeting on Monday 11th June, when Michael Wynne-Jones will give a talk on “Colour me Gorgeous.”

The competition is an object which you bring along, beginning with the letter ‘D’, e.g.. Diamond.

It is possible that the rain now, will benefit the flowers still to come in the gardens which will be open for the Midsummer Gardens in Playden during the weekend of 23/24 June, organised by the Friends of Playden Church. They will be open from 1 to 5 pm each day. The start is by the church gate where you can purchase your ticket for £5, valid for each day. The ticket is a map showing the location of the gardens, and there will be teas and a plant stall.

The Mobile Library will be at Poppyfield on Monday from 11.30 to 11.50.

The 11 am service for the first Sunday after Trinity will be Parish Communion led by the Vicar.
