Apologies to all readers for the lack of Pett and Pett Level Village Voice last week. This was due to circumstances beyond my control but I have been assured that there should be no problems in the future.

At the meeting of Pett Parish Council on Tuesday January 21 the items discussed in Public Time included:

East Sussex County Council – extra money has been made available to deal with potholes.

Rother District Council – budget discussions are still ongoing but the council will have to look at discretionary spending, which includes such things as the public toilets at Pett Level.

The proposed tree to commemorate those from Pett who died or were injured in the First World War – a fir tree in front of the church has been suggested.

Pett Post Office- agreed that this matter could be discussed at the Annual Parish Assembly to be held on Tuesday March 18.

Church Services on Sunday February 2 – Holy Communion – David Wotton, St Mary & St Peter, Pett at 9:30am; Sunday Service at the Methodist Chapel at 10:45am.

POPP on Tuesday February 4 will feature Elizabeth Bowring – Trading Standards. Sheryl Tucker, the nail technician will also be there. The session runs from 10:30am to 2:30pm and will include a two-course lunch for just £5.

The Village Coffee Morning starts again on Wednesday February 5. Starting at 10am Sally and her team will be ready to welcome you with the very best coffee, tea, biscuits and yummy, yummy cakes.

Also on Wednesday February 5 the Mobile Library will be in Pett and Pett Level. It will start at the Church at 10.10am, moving on to Chick Hill at 10:50am and finishing at The Smuggler at 11.20am.

On Thursday February 6 Flicks in the Village will be showing the appropriately titled Summer In February (15). This film is directed by Christopher Menaul and is a deeply moving and tragic love story played out against the timeless beauty of the Cornish coast, in the approaching shadow of the Great War.

Sir Alfred Munnings (Dominic Cooper) began life as an artist in true bohemian style. On form, he was a superb painter of horses and English country life, and ended up covered in honours as President of the Royal Academy, This film is based on a little-known episode from his early life, when he lived at Lamorna in Cornwall, with a group of friends and models.

Gilbert Evans, expressively played by Dan Stevens is Munnings’s friend and the object of their opposing desires is tyro painter Florence Carter-Wood, interpreted to great effect with crisp surface and dark indecision by Emily Browning. The tragedy unfolds briskly in beautifully shot scenery and tempestuous weather. The story is engrossing, the direction skillful and unobtrusive, the acting of high quality.

The film starts at 7:30pm with refreshments served from 7pm. Membership forms are available on the night or you can always pop into the Butchers shop in Pett and grab an application form.

Have you got your tickets for Grease yet? The popular Sing Along Evening on Saturday February 8 at Pett Village Hall is fast becoming a sell-out. With tickets just £8, including supper and the chance to go back in time to the 50’s, you won’t want to miss out. So get along to the Butcher’s Shop or ask a committee member and come along and join the fun!

The New Beach Club in Pett Level, a family-friendly social club, has received a fresh lease of life through the new managers, Robin and Sarah. Along with Simon in the kitchen, they extend a warm welcome to new and existing members and their guests.

The bar is open every lunchtime and evening and the kitchen Wednesday to Sunday lunchtimes and Wednesday and Friday evenings. Regular entertainment includes a quiz night on Mondays and free pool on a Wednesday evening. Booking is recommended for Sunday roast and fish and chips on a Friday.
