Many of the volunteers who gave their time before the lockdown are still isolating or are worried about returning to their roles, with many of them part of the vulnerable over-70s group.

Charities will therefore be looking to recruit more volunteers to fill the gaps and allow them to start delivering services again.

Jenny Holmes, communications officer for Voluntary Action Arun and Chichester (VAAC), said: “Charities need our help, now more than ever. The virus pandemic has seen them take a double hit since March, with their fundraising efforts being halted, both through the closure of their charity shops and the cancellation of fundraising events, as well as many of their volunteers having to self-isolate or shield themselves.

“Some services have had to stop altogether, while others have had to change or add to their normal services, or the ways they are delivered.

“Now as charities are starting to look towards trying to return to normal, they need extra support to help them get back up and running.”

There are many different roles available; from helping charities to raise money in their shops, doing administration or office tasks, looking after animals or conservation areas, manning advice and support helplines, or even helping to make decisions on how the organisation is run as a trustee.

A message from the Editor, Gary Shipton:

In order for us to continue to provide high quality and trusted local news, I am asking you to please purchase a copy of our newspapers.

With the coronavirus lockdown having a major impact on many of our local valued advertisers - and consequently the advertising that we receive - we are more reliant than ever on you helping us to provide you with news and information by buying a copy of our newspapers.

Our journalists are highly trained and our content is independently regulated by IPSO to some of the most rigorous standards in the world. But being your eyes and ears comes at a price. So we need your support more than ever to buy our newspapers during this crisis.

Stay safe, and best wishes.
