Car parks at the beach were closed earlier this week due to a huge influx of visitors and authorities are concerned people will return over the long weekend as temperatures rise.

People are allowed to travel to the beach following the government’s latest advice but must continue to social distance.

Rother District Council said a large number of people at Camber Sands will make social distancing ‘extremely difficult’, particularly at high tide when beach space is ‘severely reduced’.

This weekend, there will be limited car parking and reduced toilet facilities at Camber to deter visitors, according to the council.

There will also be no lifeguard patrols this weekend as seasonal workers have not been included in the government’s Job Retention Scheme. Read more about that here.

A Rother District Council spokesman said: “Over the past week we have seen a large number of people head to Camber Sands beach to enjoy the warm weather following changes in Government guidance.

“The numbers seen at the beach makes social distancing extremely difficult not only for visitors, but also for residents living in the area. This is a particular problem at high tide when the amount of usable space on the beach is severely reduced.

“As well as limited car parking and reduced toilet facilities, there is no lifeguard service which means there is no help for people who may get into difficulty in the water.

“To help us protect the health and safety of the public we are urging people to avoid travelling to Camber over the bank holiday weekend.”
