The event, which took place in partnership with Plaistow and Ifold Parish Council, had originally been due to take place in May, but was delayed due to the lockdown.

County Councillor Janet Duncton attended and laid a poppy wreath and the church’s Licensed Lay Minister Janice Taylor said a few words.

A parish council spokesman said: “The trees will work in harmony with others already on the green to create a contemplation area.

“They will surround a VE Day 75 commemorative bench and the village’s Silent Soldier to provide the community with a designated space to come together, at times such as Remembrance Day, in quiet reflection.

“It will also put the very youngest in our community at the heart of this act of remembrance.

“The Pre-School will commission a memorial plaque for the area dedicating the space to the memory, sacrifice, courage and determination of an extraordinary generation to whom we owe an enormous debt of gratitude.”

A special mini-concert will be help on the village green to mark VE Day 75 as soon as it is possible to do so.
