Coppercrunch fudge scoops top prize at Great British Food Awards for Arundel company

An Arundel business has scooped the top prize at this year’s Great British Food Awards.

The Copper Pan Fudge Company’s Coppercrunch was named as the winner in the Sweets category by judge Maunika Gowardhan before the buying team from Booths crowned it Grand British Champion.

The Coppercrunch fudge, a crunchy toffee and chocolate combination, was devised during lockdown by owners Jason and Mike Grant, who decided to play with recipes after food shows and artisan markets were closed until 2021 – and it became an overnight bestseller.

Mike said: “Even with the Coppercrunch success we knew this year was going to be incredibly tough, but thanks to the scouts at Downyourhighstreet.co.uk we found ourselves on ITV’s Lorraine with Mark Heyes featuring our company as one of his gift ideas.

“The exposure spurred us on, persuading us to enter the confectionary category of the Great British Food Awards.”

Jason said: “It was incredible to be told we’d won the Sweets award with Coppercrunch.

“To then find out we’d won Grand British Champion, knowing the calibre of both smaller, artisan businesses and big household names who’d also entered products, was simply extraordinary.

“We received the call on the same day we opened our new concept store in Arundel.

“It made for the perfect opening weekend.”

John Gill, head of commercial operations at Booths, said: “What an absolute joy. On appearance quite unassuming, maybe it’s a fudge or possibly toffee, the layer of chocolate and nuts adds some intrigue, but surely nothing I haven’t seen before.

“On first taste though, wow, just wow – the taste of toffee brittle, nuts and chocolate sent my mind back to when I was a kid, remembering flavours I’d forgotten but love so much.

“Texture wise, the brittle top layer combines wonderfully with the soft toffee beneath to deliver a heavenly bite every time. Coppercrunch really is supreme.”

The Copper Pan Fudge Company’s concept store in High Street, Arundel, has closed until Saturday to allow Jason and Mike to make it Covid safe.
