Pacifists' discussion on Trident renewal in Hastings

Anti-war campaigners will be holding a meeting in Hastings to discuss renewing Britain's nuclear weapons later this month.

With the decision on whether the UK will renew its Trident system imminent, Hastings Against War (HAW) will host a discussion on the subject on Sunday, February 21,

The group recently held an information stall in the town centre and will soon be lobbying Hastings and Rye MP Amber Rudd.

HAW’s Fiona MacGregor said: “Nuclear weapons do not deter terrorists.

“They represent mid-twentieth century technology that is irrelevant for today’s security threats: climate change, pandemics and cyber attack.

“False alarms, faulty equipment, human error and political brinkmanship have brought us perilously close to nuclear destruction on numerous occasions.

“It is pure luck that we haven’t yet had a disaster – but luck will eventually run out.”

Interest in Trident is growing as the information stall was well received and gained support from councillors, members of the Trades Council and religious groups, according to HAW.

The group will lobby Ms Rudd about Trident renewal: a project which could cost £167 billion over the lifetime of the project, according to an estimate based on official government figures.

HAW will also be present at a national demonstration against Trident on Saturday, February 27.

Anyone wishing to travel with the group to London should meet at Hastings rail station at 9am on that date.

At the discussion event there will also be a screening of the classic black comedy about nuclear weapons Dr Strangelove.

The event if free and is from 3pm to 5.30pm at the Observer Building, Cambridge Road.

HAW meets at 7.30pm on the first and third Tuesdays of every month at the Friends Meeting House, South Terrace.
