St Robert Southwell takes action in Fairtrade fortnight

St. Robert Southwell was Horsham’s first Fairtrade school achieving Fairtrade status in October 2010, however, each year the school needs to support the award by promoting and taking action for Fairtrade both in the school and the wider community.

As a Catholic community, the school wants to play its part in building a fairer food system where no one is exploited.

Young people are passionate about fairness and global issues, so this is a very practical way for them to take real responsibility for the impact of their actions and live out their faith!

St Robert Southwell wants to remain a Fairtrade School because Fairtrade contributes to making the world a fairer place. Nearly 1.5 million farmers across the world are benefiting from a fair price and the Fairtrade Premium which enables them to provide for their families.

Fairtrade is a simple way to make a difference by thinking carefully about our everyday choices. It’s about better prices, decent working conditions, local sustainability and fair terms of trade for small-scale farmers.

This year the children encouraged their families to buy more fairtrade products, made delicious recipes with Fairtrade ingredients, and learnt about the lives of Fairtrade producers. They also paraded around the roads near the school dressed as Fairtrade workers and objects delivering flyers to houses to promote the Fairtrade petition STICK with FONCHO TO MAKE BANANAS FAIR in 2014.
