This is in reply to G J Kifford of Eastbourne about the wearing of masks (Herald letters, Friday July 3 click here to read).

There are many members of society who cannot wear a mask, including people like me who have asthma.

People who have this condition as well as other breathing problems such as COPD are not able to wear to masks because they cannot breathe.

Unfortunately there are no outward signs that we have this problem, and I do know of people who have been abused for not wearing a mask, and it concerns me so much I’ve actually written to my MP about it.

The Government Advice still stands that those who have respiratory conditions do not have to wear a mask.

I assume that in the coming weeks and months there will be a card to show which indicates why we are not wearing one, however at the moment there is not.

It is far more important to keep social distancing and not to get angry with people who through no fault of their own cannot wear a mask.

I have noticed that those who do wear masks are moving them up and down their faces and thereby spreading more germs around than if they weren’t wearing one in the first place.

There are some who just wear a mask over their mouth.

There has been no proper education on how to wear masks, and until there is we will still have these problems.
