Since the redevelopment of Eastbourne town centre one literally takes one’s life in one’s hands.

If a shopper or visitor is not killed in one attempt to cross the road from the tourist centre to Brufords the jeweller, one could die of a heart attack in the Beacon, due to the total lack of seating.

The road opposite the Tourist Information Centre has been tiled very prettily at enormous expense but there is no zebra crossing or bollards to stop the speed of traffic.

In fact, already some car drivers are using the area as if they were on Brands Hatch.

The pedestrian stands no chance, the kerb is far too high and the town does have an elderly population.

In the new development of the Beacon there are no seats whatsoever except outside a coffee shop.

It does not encourage anyone to linger in comfort.

Personally I left the area quickly to make my way back to the Arndale Centre where seating is provided.

Even H&M, an exceptionally large store, does not provide any seating whatsoever.

I visited the store and the surrounding area last Thursday and felt conspicuous there were so few people about.

If this development has cost the millions reported, both money and time has been wasted.

In no way will it ever compete with Brighton’s shopping area.

After the visit I feel I am lucky to be still alive.

It is an experience I do not intend to repeat.
