Respect is needed

I REFER to the front page article (Gazette, May 3), highlighting the activities of animal rights activists in this area.

I cannot condone criminal activity in any sphere of life, but it must be accepted that animals do have rights, and these rights should be respected.

Incidentally, new criminal welfare laws have just come into force in this country, which range from providing a suitable environment for an animal, suitable diet and, for those convicted of cruelty to an animal, penalties can be severe, including heavy fines or imprisionment.

In an age of increasing violence, not only in this country but in the wider world, how important it is that the rights of others and the rights of all creatures should be respected.
