Record success for students

The college achieved a sensational “treble”, with first prizes in French, German and Spanish languages essay competitions!

Helen Taylor, Subject Leader for French and a Deputy Head of Faculty at Collyer’s said: “The competition is open to students right across the Horsham District, so this really is a tremendous achievement. Collyer’s has a great reputation for lanaguages and these prizes highlight our students’ excellence and the hard work of the talented lanaguages team here.”

At a presentation ceremony in the Council Chamber in Park North on Thursday 15th May, the French Essay Competition first prize was awarded by Cllr Philip Circus, Chairman of Horsham District Council, to Helen Law; second prize to Hollie Finch and third prize to another Collyer’s student, Mark Hewitt.

In the German Essay Competition, Helen Law achieved first Prize; in the Spanish Essay Competition, first prize went to Richard Coldham, second prize was awarded to Terence Chan and third prize to Anna Holcombe.

The candidates each had to write an essay in French, German or Spanish on environmental issues and give their thoughts on possible solutions. The essays were judged on content, use of language and accuracy. The judges commented that they were very impressed by the standard of all the entries and congratulated all of the students across the district who took part.

The winners received their official certificates and prizes of £50, £25 and £10 book tokens respectively. After Cllr Philip Circus, Chairman of H.D.C. had presented awards, the Chairman of Horsham District Twinning Association Peter Mullarky, kindly congratulated the Collyer’s winners on producing insightful essays with an outstanding level of accuracy and range of vocabulary.

Collyer’s Vice Principal, Steve Nicholls, was thrilled: “This is superb news! In any language, a treble is an incredible achievement! Thanks must go to our very strong modern languages practitioners - I know that they are rightly very proud of their students’ record performance.

“Congratulations to all who took part and huge thanks to the Horsham Twinning Association for making this fantastic competition possible.”
