No poll, no democracy

I WRITE regarding Don Ayling and myself having been elected unopposed in Arundel.

I think this is a significant event in the local political cycle, as this is the first time in Arun's history that members in a ward have been elected unopposed and the first time since 1992 that the Conservatives have had two elected members in Arundel.

It may seem that this has come very easy, but behind the scenes Don and I have worked very hard as councillors and have kept residents updated via our regular newsletters and my website.

While I am pleased and proud to serve the electorate of Arundel for another four years, my primary concern is that voters should have been able to express their opinion in an election.

As a Conservative councillor, I strongly believe in the democratic process.

The other parties, by not competing, have let this process down and denied the electorate their say.

Even if the opposition don't think they have a chance in winning, they should still put up candidates so there can be a public debate and voters can make a choice.

The undermining of the political process is Tony Blair's true legacy.
