LETTER: Profit trumps quality of life

I was surprised to read in your paper that Horsham MP Jeremy Quin has already made up his mind to actively support the Davies’ proposals although we have, as yet, only heard half of the story.

Sir Howard Davies is a businessman and he has produced a Business Report the guiding principle of which seems to be that profit trumps the quality of life.

It is imperative to consider the social effects of these proposals. Not only how they affect us locally but also their effects at Heathrow.

To my knowledge there has not been a general review of the public’s attitude to runway expansion in this area and as the final decision in this matter is to be made by the government it is presumably now up to our MP to represent us in this matter.

Another point worth mentioning is that Gatwick, the world’s busiest single-use runway airport, has miraculously escaped with only minor incidents in the past 50 years. Each year the number of aircraft movements is increasing [one every 63 seconds in 2014] and it must only be a matter of time before some official body insists on a second runway for safety reasons.

I do hope that Mr Quin will keep an open mind on these proposals until he has explored all aspects as there may be others, like myself, outside Warnham who consider the collateral effects of expansion at Heathrow are too great a price to pay.

Also our local infrastructure would benefit from improvement!
