LETTER: Privatisation pushes up prices

Despite energy privatisation being a disaster in the UK our aid budget is being used to support the same failed approach in places like Nigeria.

Around £100m of public money is being used to support privatisation of the Nigerian power sector – and has already led to higher prices, blackouts and an actual decrease in the amount of electricity being produced.

Here in the UK we might have avoided the blackouts, but privatisation has still led to us paying more for the energy we need, with one in five people having to choose between heating and eating, while the profits the Big Six have made from us have increased fivefold since 2009.

So it is a scandal that millions from our aid budget is being used to support the corporate monopolisation of energy in the global south.
