LETTER: No confusion when talking to God

Last weekend I discovered why Daleks say ‘exterminate’ so often. Doctor Who’s companion was trapped inside the shell of a Dalek and whenever she voiced some human sentiment such as ‘I love you’ it came through the external speaker as ‘exterminate!’.

Back in the real world, I too find that my words don’t always come out the way I intend them. Many times I’ve said something which is taken the wrong way and the more I’ve tried to explain my meaning the deeper the hole I’ve dug for myself.

I assume I’m not the only person this happens to, so I’ve learned not to be quick to take offence if someone says the wrong thing. Perhaps they mean well but are stumbling over the words.

I’m very glad that talking to God doesn’t involve the same confusion. You don’t have to be so careful with your speech when praying – at least not when praying in private. God doesn’t just hear your words, he knows what you mean. In prayer you never have to worry about the way you express yourself. God understands you.
