Green lungs are vital to us all

Having spent my entire life in Bexhill I am appalled by the way this elected dictatorship currently holding office in Rother decides how we the residents of Bexhill should have our assets sold off.

This in my opinion is yet another reason why we should have a devolved council in Bexhill.

Our 41,000 residents have had little or no say in what happens to our heritage, if Rother want to dispose of an asset which they inherited from the old Bexhill borough in 1974, at the very least it should be offered to the community. We all know that the small amount of money that will be raised by selling this asset will be spent and disappear without trace after a few months, but the community will have lost a public amenity treasured by many.

Is our society just motivated by money, we seem to know the cost of everything but the value of nothing.

I expressed my concerns about the disposal of St Mary’s Wood and the desire to relieve ourselves of responsibility for the Highwoods in Pear Tree Lane in the Council Chamber. I was assured that nothing would be lost, because they would be offered to appropriate organisations to care for them and keep them available to the public.

These green lungs are essential in providing recreational areas and a quality vista in the built environment.

With the huge amount of planned building in and around our town we cannot afford to lose these facilities.

I urge every resident to make their voice heard, send a message to those who have made this decision, do not sell this asset, and don’t deprive future generations of a quality of life that must be worth more than 30 pieces of silver.
