Creativity and vision

WHILE acknowledging the sad truth of the front page article “Child fears as poverty mapped out” (Gazette, January 19), it is not how any of us want it to be.

There is no point, however, in blaming each other – we are all to blame.

If we are to change this situation, it can only be by working together.

Working together does not leave room for divisions between political parties, social services, churches, health groups, housing, etc.

There is strength in unity.

I know this is happening to some degree, but the question must be asked: “Why is it still not working?”

I want the people of my ward to be listened to in a holistic way.

It is only when you help someone to join together the pieces of their current situation that they are able to rise up out of the hopelessness into a brighter place both for them and their children.

Poverty is not just the lack of money and employment, and homes below standard, but there is a need in all of us for love, respect and encouragement, especially so for our children.

I am not saying that I know all the answers, but as a starting block, I am proposing an opportunity to be available to listen, at the Keystone Centre, Eldon Way – I will put up notices around the area advertising the date and time.

I would like people to join me for coffee and I really do want to hear what issues matter most to them.

I cannot promise to solve every problem, but if we work together – really work together – then I can promise you that lives will be improved.

Wick village could become a place where people encourage and support each other, where children achieve so much more than their parents were able to do.

Wick is becoming a place known for its creativity and vision.
