Collyer’s students remember Holocaust

Last week a moving tribute to the millions of lives lost during the Holocaust was created by students at Collyer’s.

The all day event on Monday the 27th January supported National Holocaust Memorial Day.

Emma Harrison Beesley and Kate McMartin, who have been involved in the Lessons from Auschwitz Project run by the Holocaust Educational Trust, put together a display on the ground floor of the Learning Resource Centre at Collyer’s.

Emma Harrison Beesley said: “The idea was to promote the aim of the Lessons from Auschwitz Project, to raise awareness of the Holocaust and stop anything like that ever happening again.”

The National Holocaust Day was started in the UK in 2001 and takes place every year on the 27th January. The date is significant as it was the day Auschwitz was liberated in 1945.

Emma added: “Kate and I were particularly struck by the piles of victims’ shoes when we visited Auschwitz back in November and decided to try and incorporate this with our display. We went around different classes in the college, taking photographs of students’ shoes and then presented them in a collage.”
