Coast to Coast walk raises funds for Church project

Four members of Pulborough United Reformed Church recently embarked on a 200 mile adventure across some of the most beautiful landscape in England on the Coast to Coast walk, established by the well-known walker A J Wainwright, from St Bees on the Irish Sea coast to Robin Hoods Bay on the North Sea.

The original intention was for Mike and Liz Sollom to join Gerald and Janet Batt to celebrate their Ruby wedding anniversary.

However, it also provided the opportunity to raise much needed funds, through sponsorship by friends, neighbours and relatives, for a project to redevelop the Pulborough Church to provide improved access and facilities. Liz Sollom came up with the idea of a ‘sconathon’ where people pledged money for each scone eaten (maximum one each per day) throughout the trip.

Said Liz: “The walk took 15 days and, surprisingly, finding a scone each day proved to be one of the biggest challenges! However, we used our ingenuity and were able to meet our goal.”

Over £1500 has now been raised and all four walkers are delighted with the outcome.

Janet Batt said: “We are overwhelmed by people’s generosity. The whole church is heavily involved in raising money for improvements to our facilities and access and we are well on our way to achieving our target. (OR this sponsorship will help us to achieve our target). To help in this way by walking through such beautiful scenery in the Lake District, the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors has added something very special to our anniversary celebrations. We were privileged to meet so many lovely people on our journey from all over the world and we are left with wonderful memories at the cost of only a few aches and pains gathered along the way.”
