Better facilities do not equate to a better deal

IT was so good to see Nick Gibb, MP, supporting the Worthing Road allotment holders regarding the proposed development of this land (Gazette, August 6).

However, it was equally disheartening to read the comments of the town clerk, Peter Herbert, who spoke of a "better deal" for allotment holders. I have spoken with many other allotment holders here and none of them is happy to receive better facilities, i.e., increased security and toilets in lieu of plots.

I don't consider 70 affected plots to be "relatively few" and wish to point out that, once building has started here, the site would be changed from a greenfield site to brownfield, so making it easier to build even more on it.

I have met people who helped their parents up at Worthing Road and now bring their own grandchildren. This place may not look much to suited guys with visions of more facilities in our town, but I don't believe that denying our children's children the value of this green, family-orientated functional space is the way to solve, or improve, other problems or "lack" that exist in our community.
