An unnecessary war

IF East Preston and Kingston wish to get up to date, they must look to tradition.

A lady from Kingston (Gazette, September 2) complained of not being able to vote in the recent village hall poll.

The fact is, the two parishes have been associated for nearly 900 years.

East Preston church is also Kingston church. Social facilities in East Preston have almost always been for Kingston people, too.

Several organisations have both places in their titles, as, indeed, does East Preston and Kingston Village Hall. What could be more obvious than that they should be under one parish council, albeit with committees for particular purposes?

As to the horrible voting arrangements — for a parish poll it should be possible to pick up voting slips from the library and elsewhere and deposit them there on completion. Providing some secrecy is forfeited, with names and addresses required on the return envelope. Would that be cheaper and more inclusive?

And why is everyone resigning? The village hall is perfectly functional and the lack of some extra storage, which could be rectified, is barely a matter for internecine warfare.
