LETTER: Brown bin charge is not justified

Having just received the renewal notice for the brown bin collection, l was surprised to note that the increase was over 18 per cent for a three year period.

Unless Horsham has an inflation rate beyond the UK rate for the same period such an increase is unjustified on this fact alone. Our councillors approved the increase.

Equally, l tried to establish what happened to the waste, once collected.

Was it sold to a third party who recycled it as fertiliser which was then sold back to the general public?

If so, what income did the district council receive and where did it go?

Nobody at the council could give such information which would, anyway, be subject to an Fol request!

This is a classic load of ‘garden rubbish’! Is National Security at stake?

Should what I suspect be taking place, the cost to the third party of buying our garden waste (it does not belong to the council) should be raised to cover all the added increases.

This would mean that we, the local tax payers, need not incur any increases - particularly when our FREE raw material has been used.
