Oarsome Chance for 90 youngsters at Cobnor

Oarsome Chance Foundation, a new charity working with disadvantaged youngsters in the three harbour areas of Cobnor, Langstone and Havant, Portsmouth, has held its first youth fun rowing event.

90 youngsters attended The Oarsome Chance Challenge, at Cobnor Activity Centre last Friday and Saturday.

Emma O’Grady, trustee of Oarsome Chance, said: “This was our first event of this kind and was a great success.

“We had around 90 youngsters rowing from various schools and clubs, including children from King Richard School in Portsmouth, Park Community School in Leigh Park, Littlegreen School in Chichester, Amery Hill Academy in Alton, the Releasing Potential charity which is based in Havant, The Acorn Community Centre in Weacock, and Zaznac Inland Coastal Rowing from Worcester.”

“As well as the ‘on the water’ rowing challenge, we had a fun dragon boat style competition which provided great entertainment as well. On the land we had erg indoor rowing competitions, wall climbing and archery.

“We received extraordinary feedback. Teachers and group leaders unanimously praised the event for its activities, venue and atmosphere. The youngsters were all full of smiles and happy faces throughout the day, enjoying participating in the events and learning new skills. One school who were only due to attend on the Friday, also returned with some of the students to take part in Saturday’s activities as well. One group leader has since e-mailed us to say that it was the best event their youngsters had ever been on, and another teacher that the memories will stay with the youngsters for a very long time. Everyone at Oarsome Chance have been absolutely delighted with the results.

“The boats that we row with are built by disadvantaged youngsters and we have a number of other boats currently in build in the area and will be launched in the coming months. Oarsome Chance was set up just one year ago. Our aim as a charity is to provide the opportunities for disadvantaged youngsters.”
