He also spent a lot of his working life as a sound engineer on show grounds up and down the country, as well as being second in command of security at famous venues such as Aintree racecourse and the Hampton Court flower show.

Cllr Ayling's latest role as the Arun district's civic figurehead continues a lifetime of dedication to public service, particularly in his home town of Arundel. He has represented it on the district and town councils.

Along with his mayoress Elspeth McCreadie, he was the mayor of Arundel from 1999-2002 and has also served on Lyminster and Crossbush Parish Council for the past 14 years, ten of them as chairman.

Away from council meetings, Cllr Ayling has spent nine years as the treasurer of The League of Friends of Arundel and District Hospital. He served for 30 years as secretary of the Arundel Festival Fringe, having started it in 1977.
