MP asks for government decision on burner

Lewes MP Norman Baker has formally written to Ruth Kelly, the Secretary of State for Communities and Local Government, to urge her to 'call in' the decision of East Sussex County Council to approve the plans for an incinerator at Newhaven.

In his letter Mr Baker outlines his main concerns over the proposed facility, which include:

questions over the efficiency of the incinerator

the effect that incineration would have on gaining higher recycling and composting levels

the unsustainability and negative economic impacts of the development

the environmental impact of the development

questions over whether the proposed stack height is sufficient

questions over the transportation requirements of the plan

the overwhelming lack of public support for the project

Mr Baker added: 'This proposed incinerator is being forced upon the people of Newhaven by the Conservative County Council, which has refused to listen to both the concerns of local residents, and the many reasoned arguments against it.'
