HORTICULTURAL SOCIETY: We start with the news from the Mountfield Horticultural Society who held their annual coffee morning and plant sale last Sunday. This was hosted by Rachel Craddock, ably assisted by daughter Glenda and grand-daughter (who drew the raffle tickets) in glorious sunshine and the event was as bacchanalian as ever.

The Schedule of Classes for entry to the Flower Show (Saturday 25th) is now available from Celia (9, Hoath Hill), Sue (13, Eatenden Lane), or Brown’s Farm Shop on the A21.

RUBBISH AND RECYCLING: Rother District Council have advised that the rubbish and recycling dates will change for most Mountfield properties from June onwards. Full details are on the RDC website; just input your postcode and you can view a complete calendar. For Eatenden Lane, Hoath Hill, Solomon’s Lane, round the Church, Upper Mountfield (the area centred on Rock Cottage!), Park Pale, and Beyond the Pale, the new collection dates start with Friday 5th: rubbish; Friday 12th: recycling and garden waste (if subscribed); Friday 19th: rubbish and Friday 26th: recycling and garden waste.

According to the RDC website, there are different arrangements for both the Vinehall area (starting with rubbish on Wednesday 3rd) and John’s Cross area (starting on Monday 8th). It will all doubtless coincide with the warmest weather of the year so it will pay to get it right.

WALLED GARDEN: On Saturday 30th July Lucinda and Simon Fraser are holding a coffee morning at Mountfield Court for the benefit of Church Funds from 10.00am to 12.00 noon. This will coincide with the first opening of the Walled Garden, a project which was taken on five years ago by Adrian and Gussy Bidwell when it had lain untended for many years. Gussy now has a produce stall every month at Brightling Market selling the fruits of their hard labours to tame what was a wilderness. Plants and in season vegetables will be on sale, and if her ‘girls’ are in good form maybe free range eggs.

REMINDERS: A reminder that all hands are welcome to help with the planting of flower tubs at the Village Hall from 11.00 am on Sunday May 31st. Any donations of plants would also be much appreciated. All help and donations from 11.00 am. For more info, contact Chris Holden on 01580 389053.

MOUNTFIELD CLUB: The Club’s snooker team have won their first Summer League match with an impressive 3-2 win at home to Benenden A. Despite going 2-0 down, Pete Last won his singles match and Steve Smith and Kevin Gray then won the doubles match to claim a 3-2 win.

On Saturday May 30th, the Club is holding its annual club tournaments for darts singles and pairs and shove. The Club’s snooker tournaments are already under way with Jack Bromley, Andy Saunders, Jack Hayler, Colin Elms and Luke Hardy already through to the quarter finals

FINALLY: We’ve mentioned before that our dogs are veritable tick magnets and we must warn you that this is turning into a dreadful year for the vile things. At the time of writing (last Monday) we have recorded no fewer that 180 ticks on our three dogs (including two very ancient old dears) and are currently adding them at a rate of about ten a day. So far, we are running at about fifty per cent more than in the record year of 2012 when we reached the grand total of 504 ticks between two dogs. Do be careful with both dogs, other pets and of course children. We’ve already had one case of Lyme Disease in Mountfield.
