More local control needed for police says MP

Arundel and South Downs MP Nick Herbert has called for greater community control over policing, with councils being given the power to control elements of local police budget.

Mr Herbert has argued that that since policing is increasingly funded through council tax, local communities should be able to determine policing priorities rather than have them set nationally.

He said that Britain has the highest crime rate in Europe, apart from Sweden and public satisfaction with police is declining.
