Men urged to act to ensure prostate cancer is tackled

SOME 50 men a year in Bognor Regis are being diagnosed with prostate cancer.

The tally of almost one a week has prompted the Arun Wellbeing team to highlight ways of lessening the risks of the potentially fatal condition.

Its members are also keen to ensure the results of health checks and awareness are acted upon, instead of being ignored until the situation becomes more severe.

Team member Sarah Day said: “Men after the age of 50 have an increased risk of developing prostate cancer.

“Men need to feel they can talk about prostate cancer and not feel too embarrassed to see the doctor about any concerns.”

Cllr Paul Wotherspoon, who is in charge of Arun District Council’s community development services, said: “With conditions like prostate cancer, there is much that can be done to treat it if detected early.

“This Wellbeing campaign is aimed at reducing men’s embarrassment about talking about their health and seeking medical advice early on.”

The Arun district saw 107 men diagnosed with the cancer in 2010. Nationally, one in eight men will have it.

The initial prostate tests are quick and simple, and a GP or nurse is able to talk to patients about any symptoms or concerns.

Prostate cancer can be difficult to detect in its early stages. Some of its possible initial symptoms could be problems urinating and pain in the back, hips or pelvis.

A balanced diet and healthy, active lifestyle can help protect men from developing prostate and other cancers.

The Arun Wellbeing team provides information and initiatives to reduce health problems, promote healthy lifestyle and improve mental health.
