Let name live on in Yapton

Planning agent Alan Baker has asked that The Shoulder of Mutton and Cucumbers should live on in the new planned housing scheme in Yapton.

He comments: "The name of the public house should be preserved in the naming of the new development and this is something the parish council may wish to consider."

He says the name is unique and refers to the staple dish offered to coach travellers two centuries ago when cucumber sauce was a Sussex adjunct to the mutton.

"The pub is not particularly distinguished even with its four-square Georgian style architecture but was better known pre-second world war for its draught beer which was kept in a cool cellar, which is a rarity in this part of the county," he comments in a heritage statement with the planning application for the intended flats.

Deeds dated 1694 exist for the original building on the Main Road site. It was believed an early inn had three guest rooms and stabling for two horses. An innkeeper is mentioned in 1725.

The site was later occupired by the Shoulder of Mutton which became the Shoulder of Mutton and Cucumbers in 1832 when the publican was also a wheelwright.
