Keeping warm is a top concern for elderly in the area

AGE UK West Sussex has revealed the results of a month-long survey into how elderly people across the area deal with the cold, winter weather.

As part of the charity’s “Spread the Warmth” campaign, elderly people were questioned on the concerns they have about keeping warm during the winter.

The report discovered that 55 per cent of older people across West Sussex felt that having the heating on as much as possible, without the worry of spiralling fuel costs, would make a significant difference to their lives.

It also found 65 per cent of people aged over 65, across the county, were dreading the cold weather this winter, with 51 per cent of those surveyed claiming they were concerned about paying their heating bill during the cold months.

The survey also highlighted the fact that a significant number of elderly people – more than 20 per cent – were unaware they were entitled to the winter fuel payment.

The charity, which is based in Littlehampton, is offering advice to elderly people concerned about the cold. For information, call 0800 019 1310 or visit the Tamarisk Centre, in Beach Road.
