Jean's dismay at PO closure plan

A SEAFORD pensioner who has used the Vale Road Post office for nearly half a century is horrified at plans to close it.

Jean Mote, of Blatchington Hill, said public opposition was running high.

One elderly customer had even joked she would chain herself to the railings in an attempt to halt its closure.

Mrs Mote said: 'I have received the most efficient and friendly service from the staff at Vale Road for 49 years, from three changes of staff.

'Their friendliness, efficiency and helpfulness has been second to none, not only to me, but to all the hundreds of residents who use it daily throughout the year. It is a unique focal point for us.'

Also earmarked for closure is the Alfriston Road Post Office.

Seaford MP Norman Baker has condemned the proposed closures which he says will force many elderly and infirm people to trek into the town centre.

Mrs Mote, 73, said the post office was a vital lifeline to many. 'They will not only be shutting a post office, but also destroying a whole way of life.

'The shop stocks a whole range of confectionery, greeting cards, drinks, medicinal and household necessities. Everyone chats and it is a pleasure to shop there as it is a meeting place for friends in the whole area.'

The Post Office cites falling numbers of customers, increased running costs and changes in the way benefits are paid as the reason for the closures.

Customers are invited to have their say by writing to the Post Office, National Consultation Team, PO Box 641, St Albans, AL1 5XN.
