It's official! June was the wettest ever

LAST month was the wettest June that Bognor Regis has suffered.

Official figures from the town council’s weather station at Waterloo Square have confirmed the rainfall exceeded every other June since records began in the mid-1890s.

The monthly total for last month came to 248.2mm (9.77ins).

This was swollen by the staggering deluge of 170.9mm (6.73ins) on the 11th, Monsoon Monday, and which triggered flooding to 250 properties around the town.

Dorothy Rodefield, one of the council’s volunteers who takes the weather readings, said: “The average rainfall for June is about 47.5mm and yet almost 178mm of rain fell in the torrential deluge on just one day.

“This was the effect of a crescent of prolonged heavy rain along the south coast that day which then moved away northwards throughout the UK.”

The monthly sunshine total at 162.2 hours was well down on the 223 hours last year. The mean maximum temperature of 16.8C was below the usual 18C but the minimum was slightly higher at 12.3C compared to 11.3C.
