Informative talk about trees

The Felpham and Middleton Horticultural Society held their first meeting of the year on February 27. Some 69 members and three visitors turned up to hear Mr Mark Everson give a talk and slide show on Trees in Daily Life.

Mr Everson has worked for the Parks Council for the past 25 years and explained to us why it is sometimes necessary to take down trees.

Firstly he mentioned vandalism and showed us a slide where a tree had been completely debarked by vandals.

This meant the tree could not be saved and he urged us to report any tree vandalism to the police as they could build up a pattern of vandalism in a particular area.

Sometimes trees are near the edge of a road and lift the pavements so they too may have to come down as they may be dangerous. Ivy is also a death sentence to trees as it strangles them; and fungi can rot the tree from the inside.

Mr Everson talked about the new work due to take place in Hotham Park later this year and said that although trees would be lost, they would usually be old or damaged trees and it would be an opportunity to replant new ones.

He rounded off the evening with a question and answer session. The next meeting will take place on March 27 at 7.30pm when Mr Jim Durrant will be gIving us an Introduction to the World of Orchids.

That will be followed on Saturday, March 31, with our Spring Show at 1.30pm where, as well as the flower show,there will be plant, cake, tombola and raffle stalls and refreshments will be available.

These two meetings will take place at St Mary's Centre in Felpham, and visitors will be very welcome.
