Impact on water supplies

AS a concerned resident in Arun District where water supplies are apparently under pressure and struggling to meet demand, I question why planning permission is being sought to build nearly 2000 more homes in Littlehampton alone (600 at '˜Courtwick' and 1260 at '˜North Littlehampton' sites).

I note Southern Water is advertising locally explaining why it is necessary to fit properties in our area with water meters in an effort to manage demand and ensure sufficient water can be supplied.

It was not long ago, after a dry spell, that it looked as though we may have to resort to stand pipes in the street to access clean water, as supplies were running so low.

We frequently have hose-pipe bans and have just had the driest April on record.

It worries me that the developers do not seem to have taken any of this into account when planning to build thousands more homes plus additional business units (also requiring water and sewerage), nor the impact of these developments on existing infrastructure, resources and residents’ quality of life, should they go ahead.

We are told water supplies in our region are already under strain, struggling to meet the needs of existing residents and businesses.

In the context of prolific development having been accommodated over the last few years, doesn’t it defy all common sense to continue short-sightedly building far beyond what we can realistically sustain and provide for?
