David Shore, operations director at South East Water, said: 'These surveys will provide a fascinating glimpse into the past and give us an accurate archaeological picture of the site.

'They will also help us determine if the site is suitable for a reservoir and make sure we understand and, where appropriate, protect the environment before deciding to develop any new resources.'
