MEMORIES of the characters who peopled her Arundel childhood come flooding back very easily for Daphne Byrne.

The town remains a deeply inspiring sight for Daphne, who describes herself as 'a wacky, much-travelled 86-year-old but not feeling a day over 90'.

"I have travelled the world, but the sight of Arundel Castle and cathedral with St Nicholas in the morning mist across the frost-covered fields and rising sun must be one of the most beautiful scenes one can experience in a lifetime."

Daphne, who now lives in Havant, recalls: "We lived in Arundel at 52 Maltravers Street in 1931. My father paid 100 per annum rent. The house was sold some years ago for about 500,000.
