The annual charge for emptying green waste bins in the Horsham district will remain at £29 for 2014/15.

Answering a question from the member of the public at last night’s Horsham District Council cabinet meeting Andrew Baldwin (Con, Holbrook East), cabinet member for the environment, confirmed the charge would not be increased.

While the scheme attracted criticism from members of the public when it was introduced last year, sign up has far exceeded HDC’s initial target of 40 per cent of households with gardens.

Mr Baldwin said: “The price for garden waste will remain unchanged for the first bin and £15 for subsequent bins.”

He added: “Over 28,000 people have signed up representing 57 per cent if you exclude flats proving most residents believe £29 represents excellent value for money.”

He said the price compared very favourably to other authorities in West Sussex, with Chichester District Council charging £45, and Arun District Council charging £72.
