A RECORD number of runners turned the sun-blessed Bognor 10k a big success.

Crawley AC's Paul Rodgers romped it in a time of 31min 32sec - a full 44 seconds ahead of Chichester's James Baker.

Worthing Striders' Edward O'Brien made it a Sussex 1-2-3 by coming home third.

There were 1,312 finishers as Sunday, May 18, morning's good weather brought out the best-ever number of runners in the 13-year history of the race, despite the actual number of entries being slightly down on last year.

Two youngsters' races held before the main race were also well-attended.

The event, which was also well supported by the public along a route which began and ended in West Park, raised several thousands of pounds for charities backed by the Rotary Club of Bognor Hotham, who organised the race.

Rotary secretary Ken Dean said: "The race had added prestige because it was run as the Sussex 10k championships for the first time. We hope to achieve that ranking again."
