Fun for the whole family at Hell and High Water event in Bognor

King and Queen Canutes are being sought for Bognor Regis seafront this Sunday (September 13).

The best-dressed of the royals will win a 25 prize as the top Cute Canute of the town's first Hell and High Water event.

Any child under 16 can enter the competition. Those of that age also have the chance to draw their version of the king's famous attempt to stop the waves.

Registration for the fancy dress contest is from 2.30pm at the promenade bandstand.

Children younger than ten will have the chance to pluck a duck from the sea using a net. Each duck will be worth a prize, from a bag of sweets to 25.

Hell and High Water has been devised by North Bersted cartoonist and jigsaw designer Mike Jupp with the town council.

It is aimed at providing some madcap silliness to end the summer's season of events along the seafront.

Town council events officer Sue Holmes said: "The event was devised by Mike and originally started as a jigsaw puzzle competition on the beach '“ but it's grown.

"Activities now include a boat race, with Le Mans-style start, for teams of four, preferably in fancy dress.

"There is also a hobby horse steeplechase for individuals over 18 and a run over the breakwaters and other obstacles.

"And, of course, the jigsaw puzzle competition which will take place at the water's edge, as the tide comes in.

"We believe this is the first time a jigsaw competition, for a cash prize, has ever been held on a beach, especially with the tide coming in."

Hell and High Water begins at midday with a simulated boat rescue from the RNLI crew from Littlehampton and continues until 5pm.

The action will take place on the beach between the beacon opposite The Regis and the bandstand.

Entry forms can be obtained from Bognor Regis Town Council on 01243 825535 or in the town hall or town library.
