Friends of Egerton Park

THE Friends of Egerton Park are already planning for next year with the date set for the 2008 Green Day and proposals for a musical event in the park in association with local schoools and Bexhill Music Festival.A report to the annual meeting on this year's Green Day was positive. The friends' collaboration with Sure-Start was such a success that it was agreed that the partnership should continue next year.

The date of next year's Green Day will be Saturday, May 31 from 11.00am to 3.00pm with Sure Start running a fun- day alongside.

Planning will begin immediately to make it bigger and more exciting.

Many stallholders had already been asking for the date of next year's event so that they could prepare more thoroughly for it.

Vice chairman Richard Wheeler, pointed out that the friends had met their five main objectives early in their development:

*Working with RDC and consultants Atkins on proposals for the park

*Representing local peoples views on park issues

*Linking with Sure Start to hold events in the park, securing sponsorship from Round Table

*Organising the picnic and two Green Days in the park

*Complementing other events by attending such as the Bexhill-in-Bloom Garden Party, Carnival, De La Warr Pavilion Christmas show and Conservative and Labour party events.

Rebecca Owen, park administrator for Rother Council, gave an update on the EPIC project to restore and update the park. The bid is being prepared and will be presented at either the September or March deadline, probably March as information is delayed in coming in from some areas.

A spokesman for the friends said this week: "We thank Mr Julian Bown for taking over role as treasurer for a year and thank Rebecca Ellis for all her hard work in setting it all up.

"Much thanks to all committee members for their hard work, and it is great to see new people joining the committee with local knowledge, interest and skills.

"A great lecture was delivered by local landscape architect Jamie Liversedge on possible outcomes for Egerton Park."

Alvin Culzac told the annual meeting about plans to hold a music event in the park next year to supplement the Green Day. This is so as to emphasise that the Friends are not an environmental group per say, but a park group with strong green credentials.

It was becoming apparent to all and sundry, especially in the light of present-day severe weather catastrophes, that everyone will have to reduce their carbon footprints.

The friends are already talking to local schools, East Sussex Music Services and Toni Mansi of Bexhill Music Festival with a view to putting on a music event in the park next year.
