BOB SPENCER must be in the running for the title of Britain's oldest regular football player.

Bob, 69 hung up his boots after Buxted FC's last match of the season but plans to be back in the Autumn.

He said: 'I've been managing the team but I really want to play.

'They put me on for short spells but I'm looking for a full-time place in the team next season.'

Bob was born in Peckham, south London and worked in the City.

He moved to Hadlow Down and then gave up the day job to run a sheep farm just outside the village six years ago.

He believes the farming keeps him fit and said: 'I drink from time to time but I never smoked.

'I was born during the war and I think the diet at that time helped me to keep the weight off even now.'

Bob describes how his footie fever started in 1944 when he was watching a wartime match.

'I ran onto the pitch and picked up the ball.

'I haven't looked back.'

Now he cares for his 350-strong flock of sheep and writes poetry in his spare time.
