Floods Hit Town

FLOOD water from overnight storms closed Bexhill College and Sidley Community Primary School.

A flooded stairwell put the college out of use while a torrent swept through classrooms, computer suite and stock cupboards at the school.

Despite heroic efforts by staff during the day, the school is likely to remain closed for a day.

The college was expected to re-open the day after the flooding.

Firefighters called out during the height of Wednesday's storm pumped water out of the school.

But headteacher Julie Reece explained later the extent of the damage.

"Because we are in a dip, unfortunately when you get a massive rainfall like last night's the water pours down the slope, through the car park and through the kitchen into the school hall.

"The playground was under several inches of water."

The downpours also created problems on the roads throughout the area and led to power cuts at businesses.
