Fireman and son die in crash

A 20-YEAR-OLD fireman and his mother died in a car crash on Bank Holiday Monday.

Dominic West, a footballer in a Worthing Sunday League football team, and his mother, Heather West, 46, were killed when the Citron Saxo he was driving was in collision with a lorry on the A3 in Surrey.

The mother and son, both from Findon, were pronounced dead at the scene.

Two other passengers in the car, a 10-year-old from Worthing and Mr West's 21-year-old girlfriend, from Arundel, were taken to the Royal Surrey County Hospital in Guildford.

The 10-year-old was treated for a leg injury and is still in hospital and the 21-year-old remains in intensive care.

Mr West was a part-time firefighter based in Findon village and lived with his mother in Coombe Rise, Findon.

He was a former Worthing High student and his old school paid tribute to him this week.

Assistant headteacher Rhys Price said: "Dominic's death is a very sad loss to the local community.

"He was a very pleasant boy and had a lot to offer.

"He was a very talented sportsman '“ a county standard 800-metre runner and a very talented footballer.

"He was very committed to sport and very popular among his year group."

Dominic's love of sport continued when he left school and he played for Becket Wanderers, a Worthing-based Sunday League team.

His mum worked at Lime Tree Doctors' Surgery, also in Findon.
