FINES FOR SAFETY LAPSES

EAST Sussex County Council has taken criminal proceedings for the first time against companies who have not used adequate safety precautions at roadworks.

Southern Water was fined 500 at Lewes Magistrates Court for inadequate signing at its works in Nevill Road, Lewes.

South East Water was fined 1,000 at Eastbourne Magistrates Court for inadequate signing at its works in Darley Road, Eastbourne.

Cllr Matthew Lock, member for transport, said: 'Keeping the roads safe is a priority, whether it is for drivers or pedestrians.

'It is essential that companies which carry out work on our roads keep strict safety regulations for the sake of their employees and the public.

'By prosecuting, we are sending this message out loud and clear.

' We will continue to follow this policy to make sure there is a high standard of safety at all roadworks.'
