Two very different things, but increasingly, and logically, the church is paying more and more regard to Mums, and St Andrew’s is no exception, for the service will include children giving posies of spring flowers to their mothers. All will be welcome and it is a good time to remember our Mums. Originally, the church service was intended as a day for those working away to re-visit their mother church. Now, no fewer than 157 nations have a day on which to honour motherhood, although Ireland and ourselves are two of only four countries that celebrate it on the fourth Sunday in Lent.

Curtain up… on the Pantomime Group’s AGM this evening in the village hall at 7.30 pm. Potential members are welcome to attend, to see what goes on, but they are, obviously, not entitles to vote.

The Literary Society… enjoyed a great talk nine days ago, when Patrick Coulter described his fascinating Life as a Pilot. More than forty people attended. Next Wednesday, at 2.30 pm in the village hall, it is the turn of Colin Page to give his talk on Moods of the MarshJust answer the questions… Have you got your tickets yet for the Players’ Quiz Night on Saturday March 24, at 7.30 pm in the village hall? If not, why not? Tickets, which are available from Carol Ardley at Mistral, on the Circle, are £6.50, which includes one of the Players’ well-known suppers. And Bingo…! Activate and almost forty participants had a great time last Friday at their first fund-raising Bingo Night! Ben Burford made an amazing caller, Geoff was great behind the bar and the ploughman’s supper was perfectly scrumptious! All present, from 4 year old Tibby, who got the first ‘bingo’, to the more mature players, had a wonderful time and between them raised some £200 for the club. Thanks are due to all who attended or worked hard for the event.

Activate’s Alice Tigwell… is bravely facing the half-marathon in nine days time, in order to raise funds for the club. It is suggested that everyone should get behind Alice – not to chase her and run in the event, but either as sponsors, who would be very much appreciated, or along the route to cheer her on her way on the day. If you have never been part of this event, either running or cheering, it really is an uplifting experience. Go and see for yourself. P.S. The three hours of road closures are not solely for Alice…! Bowls of goodies… The Bowls Club’s annual Coffee Morning is in the village hall tomorrow, Saturday March 17, from 10 am to 12 noon. There will be all the attractions usually associated with this event, including the very popular short Bingo session with cash prizes to bring the morning to a conclusion. Always a friendly gathering, it’s well worth a look!

Spring is here… and look what’s sprung up! At last, thanks to the patience and persistence of the Parish Council and some very welcome financial help from the police, we have ten new bollards strategically placed around the circle, which it is hoped will eliminate the ugly erosion that has been occurring. Those tempted to seek some of the larger gaps for use as their own racing chicanes should wonder whether anything sharp has been planted in these gaps as a deterrent. Don’t push your luck!

One week’s notice… of the local RSPCA Spring Fayre, which will be in the village hall next Saturday, March 24 from 2 to 4 pm. The last such event was excellent, so give this one a visit!

Two week’s notice… of an Open Wood day at Mallydams in Peter James Lane where the RSPCA Mallydams Wood Wildlife Centre will be hosting an Easter EGGStravaganza. It’s all happening on Saturday, March 31 from 12 noon to 3 pm, with last entries at 2.30 pm. It’s a free event, and no booking is required.

(There is a free, no booking event at Mallydams each month, except for the annual major Open Day in August, for which a smallish entry fee is charged, though there is ample free parking and a free mini-bus service on that day)(Personally, I’d like to see an owl spotting event. It would be sure to be a hoot!)

Where my caravan has rested… Someone who lives in the village is looking to store his 24 foot touring caravan securely in the local area on a long term basis. Accessibility and preferably a hard standing are also key requirements. Tuesday next… is Tuesday Ladies Club day, when the speaker will be Mrs Wynn-Jones on the subject of Scarf Tying. This promises to be a fascinating talk – I doubt if I could manage more than about twenty seconds, with padding. The afternoon commences in the village hall at 2.15 pm and, after the tea break, Susan Scott will be talking about Toiletries and Skincare. Altogether an afternoon to be savoured!
