Tomorrow afternoon sees the Garden Society’s annual Rose Show in the village hall. It will be interesting to see how gardeners have coped with the vagaries of the weather that has been thrown at plants and blooms in recent weeks. Entries should be staged between 9-11am and doors open to the public at 2pm.

What a fantastic weekend, whether watching the Jubilee coverage on television or participating in the various celebratory activities taking place throughout the parish.

St James church service of Holy Communion was also a Service of Thanksgiving of Her Majesty’s Diamond Jubilee on Sunday morning.

Ewhurst Green started the organised celebrations with a lunch party held on the lawn of the White Dog inn on Sunday. Fortunately a local resident who deals in marquees provided the essential cover and the rain did not spoil the event. Those attending were asked to include red, white and blue in their outfits and together with colourful hats and Royal Family masks made for a riot of colour.

The hog roast was cooked to perfection, accompanied by a range of salads, vegetables and wine. The Rector, Gordon Winchester, gave a vote of thanks to Wally Close and Robin Corbett for spearheading the event and to the staff of the White Dog who gave exemplary service. There was a toast to Her Majesty and a singing of The National Anthem.

Jubilee events in Staplecross started on Monday but it was on rather a sad note. Tents and a gazebo were erected on Sunday evening in readiness for the morning, but overnight some mindless vandals wrecked them, twisting the poles and depositing the canvas on the church roof. Nevertheless, the team got all the events ready for 10 o’clock and there was football, apple bobbing, bowling, skittles to name a few, as well as plenty of food. A hearty thank you to Pauline, Brian, Jacqui and all those who ensured the Jubilee did not go uncelebrated in Staplecross.

Celebrations continued in the evening with a firework display preceding the lighting of the beacon to join those throughout the country and various Commonwealth nations.

The Women’s Institute meets on Tuesday afternoon at 2.30pm in St Mark’s Church Room when the guest speaker will be Mr J Davey with his talk entitled “Pictures from the Past”. The competition reflects the talk with “My Own Picture from the Past”. As always there will be delicious tea to complete the afternoon.

Ewhurst Parish Council meets on Thursday (14th) at 7pm in the Church Room, Staplecross. This is an opportunity for local residents to speak at the Open Forum.
